Safety First, Doors Open: Navigating Chicago’s Air Quality and How We Are Keeping Kids Safe at Family Room

Safety First, Doors Open: Navigating Chicago’s Air Quality

If you stepped outside in Chicago today, you were likely greeted by a thick, heavy haze and the distinct smell of campfire. With smoke from Canadian wildfires pushing Chicago’s air quality into historic, hazardous territory, we know how incredibly stressful this is for parents trying to keep their little ones safe and active.

We want to reassure you that your children are safe, active, and fully protected in our care. Our leadership team was monitoring the rapid shift in weather and air quality long before our doors opened this morning, and we have implemented strict safety protocols to ensure our spaces remain clean, healthy havens.

Here is exactly how we are handling this situation, how we are tracking the data, and how we can support your family today and through the weekend.

1. Our Strict Indoor Safety Protocols

We are not taking any chances with developing lungs. Through today and tomorrow (Friday, July 17), we are operating under an ultra-conservative safety standard:

  • 100% Indoor Operations: All activities across all locations are strictly indoors.
  • Mask Distribution: We are recommending masks for anyone inside our facilities and are actively supplying high-quality masks to any child, parent, or staff member who needs one.
  • Deep Cleaning & Residue Removal: Wildfire smoke carries microscopic chemical residues and physical ash. To combat this, our team is performing deep cleans today and tomorrow to ensure no smoke particulates or chemical residues linger on our toys, floors, or surfaces.
  • Post-Smoke HVAC Overhaul: As soon as the smoke begins to dissipate this weekend, we will be replacing all of our facility HVAC air filters with fresh, high-efficiency filters to guarantee pristine indoor air quality moving forward.

2. How We Track the Air (We Don't Guess)

To make informed decisions, we use a sophisticated, three-pronged approach that combines federal data, national weather alerts, and hyper-local neighborhood sensors:

  • For Real-Time, Block-by-Block Tracking: Because smoke density shifts rapidly from street to street, we actively monitor the Lakeview PurpleAir Sensor Map. This crowd-sourced network of laser sensors gives us real-time PM2.5 readings right here in our neighborhood.
  • For the Satellite Big Picture: We use the Official NOAA/EPA AirNow Fire and Smoke Map to track the macro-movement of the wildfire plume across Northern Illinois.
  • For Direct Weather Alerts: We continuously monitor local weather alerts and wind shifts via the National Weather Service Chicago (NWS).

3. Crucial Smoke Safety Tips for Your Family at Home

Wildfire smoke is a mix of gaseous pollutants and fine physical particles that can easily bypass standard masks and home setups. Here is what health experts recommend to keep your family safe at home:

  • Watch for Asthma Triggers: The current air is not safe for sensitive lungs. Keep a very close eye on children for signs of coughing, wheezing, or shortness of breath. (For a deeper look, check out this guide on Understanding Asthma in Children from the AAFA).
  • Ditch the Outdoor Shoes: Smoke particles carry heavy chemical residues that stick to surfaces. Wash your hands and clothes frequently, disinfect high-touch areas, and clean the bottoms of your shoes (or better yet, switch to indoor-only shoes at home).
  • Mask Up Outdoors: If you must go outside, wear a well-fitted N95 mask to protect your lungs.
  • Recirculate Your Air: Run your home and car air conditioners on "recirculate" mode to prevent pulling polluted outdoor air inside.
  • Upgrade Home Filters: Check, clean, or completely replace your home HVAC air filters once this smoke event clears this weekend.
  • Stay Indoors: Avoid going outdoors as much as possible until the rain and wind clear the skies.

4. We Are Open! Safe Space, Play Sessions, & Drop-In Camps

With schools, parks, and other camps closing their doors today, we know many working parents are in an incredibly tight spot. We are here to help. Because our indoor facilities are fully sealed, climate-controlled, and filtered, we are welcoming families who need safe, clean backup options:

  • Members Open Play: Our members still have full access to our spaces during our standard hours (7:00 AM – 11:00 PM).
  • On-Demand Play Passes: Need to get the kids out of a smoky house for a couple of hours? Book a 2-Hour Family Room Play Session on-demand.
  • Immediate Drop-In Camp Registration: If your child's camp was canceled, we are accepting immediate drop-in registrations for tomorrow at both locations:
    👉 Southport Corridor Drop-In Camp
    👉 Lakeview East Drop-In Camp
